attention: (noun) the act or power of carefully thinking about, listening to, or watching someone or something; notice, interest, awareness; special care or treatment; origin: 14th century, middle english

I think I’m convinced: not everyone needs Lent. I hear what you’re saying, “you have to have Lent to get to Easter.” Well, sure you do. But not really. Because no matter what, Easter is coming, whether you like it or not. (And who doesn’t like Easter? Are you some sort of Easter-hating jerk?). Jesus was resurrected and there wasn’t anything that anyone could do to stop that. It happened.

Whether we recognize and/or practice Lent or not, Easter is coming with the furiousness of the Risen Lord.

See what I did there?

It’s Easter that is the point. Sure, Lent is the time when we try to get rid of the pennies that are in our way and that hold us back from our relationship with God. But even if you don’t do anything for Lent, Easter still happens. What matters is whether or not we are really paying attention to Easter.

I read an article that was passed around on Facebook yesterday about how we all need Lent. Well, just like this, that’s an opinion. I don’t need Lent this year. I want it. There is a fundamental difference. I can need something I don’t want, or vice versa.

I don’t just want Jesus, I need Jesus. I can get Jesus without Lent. Can’t get some resurrected Jesus without Easter.

So, forget Lent if you don’t need it. That’s great. Just don’t forget Easter, because no one wants to miss out on Easter.
